There’s something special about Kampot when the durian season starts. The air changes, the markets become busier, and along the roads, you’ll notice a sweet scent that indicates something exciting is coming to fruition. The durian season is one of the most anticipated times of the year in Kampot for locals and visitors in the know. Durian is more than just a fruit; it is part of Kampot’s identity and is closely connected to local farming, culture, and everyday life. At Amaya Kampot, the season brings fresh energy. Surrounded by verdant nature and close to town, it’s a great spot to enjoy durian season in a relaxed and engaging way.

Kampot is one of Cambodia’s main durian-growing regions, producing fruit known for its creamy texture (similar to avocado for the palate) and naturally sweet flavor. The ripening and harvesting season runs from May to September, with peak months bringing the smell of freshly harvested durian across the province and throughout the country.

The most iconic symbol of Kampot is the Durian Roundabout in the centre of town. The large durian sculpture is more than just a landmark; it shows how important this fruit is to the local community, and Cambodia. During the season, the area becomes even livelier, filled with local vendors and durians displayed along the streets, with visitors stopping by to experience it.

Durian Festival At Amaya Kampot

Durian is a seasonal treat, which you can enjoy fresh from the durian farm within our estate. Guests at Amaya often describe their experience of touring the Durian Farm as one-of-a-kind, taking in the green lush trees, the peaceful walk, and the unique scent of the King of Fruits. Yet, during the Durian Season, you can expect to enjoy more than just simply walking around the farm.

One can expect to be welcomed with an incredible view of every tree with the giant, King of Fruit, ready to be harvested. The scent is a wonder, with every fruit being at its best; you can smell durian from every corner. For some, this can be overwhelming, but believe us when we say this is an experience you will regret missing if you wait. So take a stroll, hike down the mountain to our durian farm, enjoy the green trees, and the sight of the king of fruits in its natural habitat. Did you know, it takes roughly 15 years for a durian tree to start bearing fruit? During the stroll, you can ask for a taste of a freshly picked durian, and even try harvesting them yourselves if you feel brave!

After the stroll, here is where the real fun for many begins: the Durian Tasting session. Enjoy the delight of freshly picked durians in the cool shade of Amaya’s property. Indulge yourself in different types of durian, tasting how each durian may have a different flavour, different scent and texture, and how each leaves an aftertaste that lingers and begs you to have more. Whether you eat it by itself or in a dessert, this is one of the best places to try it in an authentic and organic way. For those trying durian for the first time, the key is simple: keep an open mind.
